Last Minute Tips and Tricks

How to crack the Verbal Section in CAT 2015..?

Verbal section (VA) is a section which basically is the neutral point in the paper where the engineers don’t have any so called advantage unlike that in the quant section. This is not a section which requires remembering formulas or mind freaking steps or methods, nor does it take too much of preparation. All it requires is your reading skills and ability to comprehend. If you have school level grammar knowledge and ability to solve passages you can do great wonders in this section.
CRACKING THE VERBAL SECTION
Ø  Don’t worry too much about this section; it’s not a rocket science.
Ø  Don’t attempt if you are not sure about the answer and at times apply gut feelingto answer.
Ø  Read properly and carefully; not just the question but also the options.
Ø  Don’t worry about Grammar and Vocabulary.
Ø  Don’t read the passages too fast; use whatever strategy you are comfortable with: either reading the questions before reading the passage or vice versa.
Ø  Difficulty in the CAT is in the questions and closeness in the answer options, not in the passage. The passage generally is quite interesting and not too long but the real problem is in the options.
Ø  Having a good reading ability would be an advantage and those with this skill can conquer this section.
Ø  For cracking the Verbal Section, you need to attempt between 24 and 26 questions, depending on the difficulty of the paper. The easier it is, the more questions you need to knock off. And you need to have an accuracy of more than 90%. Anything less and it’s no better than guesswork. So around 21-23 questions have to be dealt correctly.
Ø  The Sentence Elimination and Critical Reasoning questions can also be very tough to crack. Have a balanced approach, and pick your questions wisely to get into that sweet range.

A few tips based on the question types:

·         Endeavor the passages that are from a subject you are alright with. In the event that you are bad in basic thinking, leave. This will offer you some assistance with cutting down on the negative score.
·         Vocabulary questions are information based and can be addressed accurately just in the event that you know the significance of the word and/or the decisions. It is prudent to leave these inquiries in the event that we don't get the answer in a solitary perusing.

·         Sentence correction, similar to vocabulary, is knowledge based. In the event that you don't have a clue about the grammar to be used or connected, you are unrealistic to get it right and consequently the inquiry ought to be left un attempted.
·         Guesswork should be avoided in all knowledge-based questions. We suggest that you read the question once; mark the answers, only if you know them.
·         Sentence completion (fill in the spaces) questions depend on information of vocabulary and also grammar but can be worked out based on the context and elimination of choices, especially if the question has more than one blank. It is worthwhile reading the question statement two to three times.

·         A paper is not a place for R&D, hence attempt a new type of question only if you can peg it to an existing question type.
