Innovative cricket rankings developed at IIM Raipur

A team of students at IIM Raipur have designed an innovative cricket ranking system by applying the concepts of quantitative techniques and data analysis taught to them. The ranking system is different in approach as it takes into account the whole career of players and their consistent performance throughout their careers. This is different from all time ICC rankings where players are rated according to excellent performances during one of the periods of their careers. The batsmen ranking takes in account various parameters like averages, strike rates, consistency and number of runs made against various teams. The bowlers ranking takes in accounts the averages, consistency, economy rates and number of wickets taken against various teams. In both the rankings, averages play a crucial role though they are mixed with various other parameters to arrive at the final rankings. Currently an all time ranking has been developed for test batsmen, ODI batsmen, test bowlers and ODI bowlers taking the statistical data as on 20th October 2011. The source for statistical data is cricinfo website. All the players have been assigned rating points through which difference between players at consecutive ranks can be determined. These rating points are fixed for players who have retired though they will keep on changing for the players who are still playing and hence their ranks will also keep on changing with time. The qualifying criteria for various ratings have been defined taking into account top 150 batsmen according to runs and top 150 bowlers according to wickets taken. They are as follows:-
Test Batsmen – minimum 3202 runs.
ODI Batsmen – minimum 2204 runs.
Test Bowlers – minimum 101 wickets.
ODI Bowlers – minimum 76 wickets.
The students are also planning to come up with a current ranking system which will be based on the current performance (in last 2-3 years) of the players.
Here are the rankings
The top 10 Batsmen and Bowlers in ODI and Test Format for all time have been displayed below and you can also view complete rankings of the top 150 players in every segment.

Volunteering at Chhattisgarh State Level Paralympics Athletics Championship, 2011

On the 7th November 2011, Chhattisgarh State Level Paralympics Athletics Championship, 2011 concluded at Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University campus, Raipur. In the event, physically impaired students from many of the districts of Chhattisgarh had participated. Kartavya, the CSR club at IIM Raipur felt its responsibility to volunteer at the venue and helped in the proceedings. The Club invited students from to work as volunteers and represent IIM Raipur at the event. Students helped the organizers in the prize distribution ceremony. This included writing names of participants and coaches on the certificates, classifying the certificates according to schools and districts, medals distribution etc. Some students interacted with the participants. This was a truly inspiring experience for the students. Some participants had come from remote villages of Chhattisgarh to participate in the games.
The vibrancy in the environment was truly amazing. Whenever a child’s name was declared as a winner, the joy on his or her face was undoubtedly clear. This really motivated the students and they enthusiastically helped the organizers. The Chief organizer appreciated the work of IIM Raipur students and admired them for helping in such a noble cause.”Handicapped is not the one who has physical impartibility but one who doesn’t have a passion in life”, was a learning lesson for the students of IIM Raipur.

IIM Raipur organizes Capacity Building for students from Bastar

ZEE 24 ghante Chhattisgarh in collaboration with Public Relations Department and Tribal Development Department of Chhattisgarh, organized an exposure visit of approximate 300 students from class 9 to 11 and 15 teachers of Bastar division to enlighten the students and give them exposure to various career options available to them. IIM Raipur, working in close relations with government of Chhattisgarh since its inception, was specially chosen for the occasion as it can really serve as dream institute for budding students of Chhattisgarh.
The students were welcomed to the institute by generic speeches by students of IIM Raipur followed by motivational speech by Director and local faculty of Chhattisgarh.
The students were first of all briefed about the basic principles of management. The students were told how the management is linked to day to day life of everyone including them. Then they were given a brief idea about an IIM, its working and the selection procedure. There are all in all 13 IIMs in India and Chhattisgarh boasts of having one of them. Institutes like IITs, NITs and IIMs are instrumental in development of the nation and an IIM in the state of Chhattisgarh can play a crucial role in the development of state. The students were motivated to start thinking about their career and chalk out a plan to achieve their targets. They were told that the government has taken all measures to remove any kind of economic hurdles and there are additional provisions for backward classes so that bright students can reach premier institutes without any discrimination.

Corporate Talk By Executive Director, HR, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd

Mr. Manish Kharbanda , Executive Director , HR , Jindal Steel and Power Limited visited the IIM Raipur campus on 1st November , 2010. His maintained his main motives behind this visit  as being the interaction with the students.
Mr. Manish Kharbanda has several years of experience in which he has managed large teams and spearheaded overall strategic and human resource operations. In short, he has been working in tandem with the executives of the respective companies and the employees. He has worked in diverse cultures and with companies having diverse backgrounds.
Prior to working for Jindal Steel & Power Ltd , Mr. Kharbanda had held senior positions in human resource with companies like Airtel, Reliance Petroleum, Reliance Communication, Escotel( which is now Idea Cellular) and , Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd , being the latest recipient of his services where held the position of the Chief Human Resource Officer.
Mr. Kharbanda began by highlighting his humble beginnings and how it has helped him in achieving phenomenal success at an early age. He also stressed that humility was necessary for a professional to be successful. He also showcased humour by stating that he became an HR , only by chance , as he never studied or prepared for it. He was pushed into the job as the respective HR of the concerned company in which he was working at that time resigned from the job. This began his career as an HR.
He then described the model on which JSPL was based upon. He explained every detail pinpointing the “sustainable development” as a very important parameter for every company. “Sustainable Development” is the execution of a company’s social responsibilities which is better known as Corporate Social Responsibility. This formed the base of a company’s success anywhere. He stressed it’s importance from the point of view of the Head of HR operations. This was necessary as it could bolster the belief of the locals in a region on any company operating in it’s lands. This would in return decrease the amount of labour unrest , which could otherwise be prevalent because of disparity.
After giving his point of view on the operating procedure of JSPL , Mr. Kharbanda welcomed queries from the side of the students. He received a whole lot of questions regarding the difficulties of operation in different areas of the world. Most of the employees that seek to go to a foreign land expect a raise in salary and responsibility. Most of the companies do offer these but still, some problems hinders along. The different difficulties could arise due to :
  • Law and order problems
  • Environmental problems
  • Bureaucracy problems

According to Mr. Kharbanda the root of these problems was the hindrances due to adaptability to different cultures. He pointed out that problems could be made simpler if not solved if people could unhesitatingly adapt to different cultures and accept the mindsets of people.
To solve this problem, JSPL has chalked out a plan to show it’s employees the situations that could arise in the region where he/she intends to go for work in co-ordination with the company. It has decided to counsel the families also as they would also need to adjust. This could help the employees in getting first hand knowledge of another nation , which would hold them in good stead in the future.
Besides this point he was asked the latest trends in the market to which he replied that hydro power was the way forward for a better and smarter production of power. JSPL has invested in a huge hydro project amounting to USD 8.2 billion in Arunachal Pradesh , keeping in mind this very reason.
Along with this he gave his reasons for the satisfaction of employees at JSPL and ended with showcasing his expectations towards us for building this world towards a better future.
